At the Department of Architecture, Design and Media Technology, The Faculty of IT and Design, a full time, three year fixed term position as assistant professor is available from 1 November 2026 to 31 October 2029. Do you want to help shape the next generation of computer vision and artificial intelligence research in an international, collaborative lab environment? We are looking for an assistant professor who is ready to develop an independent research profile, contribute to high-quality teaching across several programmes, and take an active role in the daily life and long-term development of the Visual Analysis and Perception Lab in Aalborg. Your work tasks As assistant professor in computer vision and artificial intelligence, you will be part of the Visual Analysis and Perception Lab at the Department of Architecture, Design and Media Technology in Aalborg. The lab is embedded in the Section for Media Technology and brings together researchers, postdoctoral fellows and PhD students working on visual analysis, perception and intelligent systems in close connection with real-world applications. You will have your daily workplace on the Aalborg campus and be part of a group that values both strong research results and a healthy, inclusive working culture. Your primary task will be to conduct research within computer vision and artificial intelligence. The position is not tied to a specific project, which gives you the opportunity to define and develop your own research agenda. Within the broad area of computer vision and artificial intelligence, you are expected to propose a compelling research direction, preferably with synergies to existing activities in the lab, and to publish your results in relevant international venues. Over the course of the appointment, you are expected to increasingly engage in external funding activities, for example by developing project ideas, preparing applications and, when relevant, contributing to project coordination. Teaching and supervision are central parts of the position. You will teach and supervise across several of our programmes, including Medialogy, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence Engineering, and Artificial Intelligence, Vision and Sound. Your teaching will span courses from bachelor to master level and will typically cover topics such as machine learning, deep learning, computer vision and programming. You will supervise student projects and theses at both bachelor and master level, and co-supervision of PhD students can become part of your role as your research activities develop. The position also involves collaboration and academic citizenship. You are encouraged to build and maintain collaborations with industrial partners and international research groups that are relevant for your research. You will travel to conferences, project meetings and collaboration visits when it is meaningful for your projects and your network. Within the lab, you will be part of the senior group that helps run and develop lab activities, for example by contributing to weekly status meetings, visits to and from other universities, and social or outreach events. In this way, you will help shape both the scientific direction and the everyday atmosphere in the Visual Analysis and Perception Lab. Your competencies You have a strong background in computer vision and artificial intelligence, documented by a relevant PhD degree in, for example, computer science, machine learning, computer vision, robotics, media technology or a closely related field. You are an experienced researcher within the broad realm of computer vision and artificial intelligence and can present an original research plan that fits within this area. We are not searching for a narrowly defined sub-specialisation; instead, we invite you to suggest a research direction that you find exciting and that can connect meaningfully to ongoing activities in the Visual Analysis and Perception Lab. Methodologically, you are comfortable working with modern machine learning and deep learning tools. You have solid experience with Python development and contemporary deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch, as well as practical experience with OpenCV or comparable tools for computer vision. You have a good command of classical computer vision concepts and methods and can combine these with data-driven approaches when relevant. Experience with machine learning operations, such as model deployment, experiment tracking or scalable training infrastructures, will be considered an advantage, as it can strengthen the practical impact and robustness of your research. In terms of teaching, you are familiar with or ready to work within Aalborg University’s problem-based learning tradition. Experience with problem-based learning and group supervision is a requirement, since much of our teaching is organised around student projects that integrate theory and practice. You should be able to support student groups in structuring projects, formulating research questions and presenting results in a clear and reflective way. Prior university teaching experience is an advantage, but strong documented potential for teaching and supervision is also valued. Fluency in English is required for both teaching and academic communication. There are no additional formal requirements beyond a relevant PhD degree; however, you are expected to engage actively in further development of your teaching competences during the employment, for example through participation in the University Pedagogy Programme. As a person, you have an easy-going and collaborative mindset. You enjoy working with colleagues and students from different backgrounds and contribute to a respectful and supportive lab culture. You are able to work independently and take initiative in your research and teaching, while at the same time appreciating that many of our activities are team-based. You contribute positively to the social life of the lab and help maintain an environment where it feels natural to share ideas, ask questions and celebrate each other’s achievements. Who we are You will join the Visual Analysis and Perception Lab in the Section for Media Technology at the Department of Architecture, Design and Media Technology. The lab is an internationally recognised environment for computer vision and artificial intelligence. Our members work on a wide range of topics, often in close collaboration with industrial partners and international research groups, and we share a strong interest in connecting fundamental research with real-world challenges. The lab currently consists of roughly fifteen PhD students, ten postdoctoral researchers and a group of more senior academics. We are a mix of Danish and international colleagues and have a friendly, informal atmosphere where people know each other and take an interest in one another’s work and well-being. We care about high quality in research and teaching, but we care equally about creating a workplace where it is enjoyable and sustainable to spend your working life. Social activities, shared lab meetings and informal discussions are natural parts of our week. The department and the section offer very flexible working hours and the possibility to work from home when it is relevant for your tasks. At the same time, we see physical presence in the lab as important for collaboration, supervision, and the development of a shared research culture, so you should be prepared to spend most days of the week on campus in Aalborg. You will have access to strong lab facilities and will work in a city with a vibrant student environment.
